Japanese Vocabulary: Driving in Japan – Review Notes

★ Today we will learn some Japanese vocabulary that is useful for driving in Japan.
★ Car in Japanese is 車 (kuruma)
★ In Japan, there are two main types of car. One is called 普通自動車 (futsuu jidousha) and the other is called軽自動車 (keijidousha).
★ 普通自動車 (futsuu jidousha) means “normal vehicle”
★ 軽自動車 (keijidousha) means “light vehicle”. It is a smaller, less powerful vehicle and is cheaper to maintain than a “normal vehicle”.
★ Automobile in Japanese is 自動車 (jidousha)
★ The definition includes cars, trucks, and tractors.
★ Motorbikes in Japanese are called バイク (baiku). They are classified as a 自動2輪車 (jidounirinsha) meaning “two-wheeled motor vehicles”.
★ Drive in Japanese is 運転する (unten suru)
★ Driver’s License in Japanese is 運転免許 (unten menkyo)
★ Parking lot in Japanese is 駐車場 (chuushajou)
★ Parking Fee in Japanese is 駐車料金 (chuusha ryoukin)
★ Parking Violation in Japanese is 駐車違反 (chuusha ihan)
★ Highway in Japanese is 高速道路 (kousoku douro)
★ One-way traffic in Japanese is 一方通行 (ippou tsuukou)
★ Two-way traffic in Japanese is 両面通行 (ryoumen tsuukou)
★ Traffic Lane in Japanese is 車線 (shasen)
