Most of you have been to public offices around your places such as city halls or ward offices, but have you ever tried to eat lunch there? In Japan, most public offices have cafeterias, and not only the staff in the offices but also everyone can eat lunch there! These days, it is getting popular to eat lunch at public offices, and this is now called お役所ごはん(おやくしょごはん – Oyakusho Gohan).

役所(やくしょ – yakusho) means “public office,” and ごはん(gohan) means “meals.” Mostly, people use the cafeterias for breakfast and lunch.

One characteristic of お役所ごはん is that people can get lunch at a lower price compared to ordinary restaurants! The price depends on each public office and what kind of meals you order, but generally, most lunches cost less than 1000 yen (about $10)! At some cafeterias, people can get today’s special lunch with even just 500 yen (about $5)!!!

Another characteristic is that people can enjoy their lunch with local beautiful views! For example, if you go to the public office which is
located near a historical castle, you can enjoy your lunch with looking at the castle!

At the cafeteria of the Minato-ku ward office, you can eat curry-and-rice while looking at Tokyo Tower! (photo below) It costs only ￥380 (about $3.80) to buy this curry-and-rice!

お役所ごはん is getting so popular these days that there are even comic books about it! With a comic book titled “ゆかいなお役所ごはん (Yukai na Oyakusho Gohan),” you can see some more delicious meals at many cafeterias in public offices.
