Have you ever heard of White Day (ホワイトデー [howaitodē])? March 14, exactly 1 month after Valentine’s Day, is White Day in Japan.
We learned last month that in Japan, women give chocolates or other presents to men on Valentine’s Day.
White Day is the day for men to give back to the women that gave them gifts on Valentine’s Day.
Traditionally, marshmallows or white chocolate are given (hence the name), but some other common gifts include flowers, jewelry, perfume, and all kinds of sweets.
White Day gifts are given to both romantic interests and to female friends or women in the office who gave you 義理チョコ (giri choko – obligatory chocolate) for Valentines day.
It is said that men are supposed to give something 3 times the value of the Valentine’s Day gift that they received. This is called 三倍返し (sanbaigaeshi).
