★ When used like this, 痛い (いたい – itai) is translated as “ouch” or “ow”
★ The word 痛い (itai) can be used in many situations. When it is used in a longer sentence, it translates as “hurts.” For example:
頭が痛いです。
atama ga itai desu.
My head hurts.
★ You can substitute any body part in for 頭 (atama – head) to say that something hurts.
★ Grammatically, 痛い (itai) is an i-adjective, which means that it is conjugated in the following ways:
痛くない (itakunai) – (it) doesn’t hurt
痛かった (itakatta) – (it) hurt
痛くなかった (itakunakatta) – (it) didn’t hurt
