PuniPuni Japanese Lesson 12: Warm and Cool – Review Notes
Today we learned how to say warm and cool in Japanese. In this review, we will learn more in depth about these words and how to use them.

Number 1:
★ Suzushii means cool in Japanese.
★ You use suzushii for cool, refreshing weather or air temperature.
★ You do not usually use suzushii for cool objects. The way to say cool for objects is sukoshi tsumetai (literally: a bit cold)
★ Unlike English, Japanese does not use the word suzushii for people (e.g. “he’s cool”). There is a different word you can use to mean cool or handsome – かっこいい (kakkoii)

Example 1:
ここはとても涼しいです。
koko wa totemo suzushii desu.
It is very cool here.

Example 2:
このスープは少し冷たいですね。
Kono sūpu wa sukoshi tsumetai desu ne.
This soup is a bit cold, huh?

Number 2:
★ Atatakai means warm in Japanese.
★ There are actually two words for warm, but they are pronounced exactly the same way. Notice that the kanji is written differently, and their usage is different.
★ atatakai (暖かい) is used for warm weather or air temperature
★ atatakai (温かい) is used for warm objects, or for anything other than weather.
★ An alternate way to pronounce these words is あったかい (attakai).

Example 1:
今日は暖かいですね。
Kyō wa atatakai desu ne.
Today is warm, huh?

Example 2:
このスープは温かいです。
kono sūpu wa atatakai desu.
This soup is warm.

Conclusion:
In this lesson we learned the words for warm (atatakai) and cool (suzushii) in Japanese. We also learned that there are actually two different words for warm, but they are pronounced the same. To say “cool” for objects, we learned to use “chotto tsumetai” instead of suzushii. Practice using these expressions a lot so that you can remember them!

How about a warm person, like when you have a fever?

Comment by Yoake Sakurai on 01/07/2013 at 9:16 amYou can use 温かい (atatakai) for body parts too, but I think fever would usually be hot instead of warm. If you have a fever you could say 頭が熱い (atama ga atsui) which means “head is hot”. You can also say 温かい手 (atatakai te) = warm hands. If you say 温かい人 (atatakai hito) it means “warm person” in the sense of like a nice person or a kind person \(◕ω◕)/♥
