Japanese Grammar Lesson 13: Time Particle ni (に) – Review Notes

Today we learned how to use the Japanese particle に (ni) to indicate a specific point in time. In this review, we will go over what we learned in the video, and we will see some other ways to use this particle.

Using the particle に (ni) to indicate time:

★　The Japanese particle に (ni) can be used to indicate a specific point in time. They are translated as in, at, or on in English.

★　に (ni) can be used to express clock times, days of the week, months, or years.

★　You would not use に (ni) with these words:

今日　　　　　　　　kyō　　　　　　　 　today
今　　　　　　　　　ima　　　　　　　　now
朝　　　　　　　　　asa　　　　　　　　 morning
晩　　　　　　　　　ban　　　　　　　　evening
いつ　　　　　　　　itsu　　　　　　　　when
毎〜　　　　　　　　mai~　　　　　　 　every~
今〜　　　　　　　　kon~　　　　　　 　this~
来〜　　　　　　　　rai~　　　　　　   　next~

Number 1: Clock time

★　When used to express clock time, に (ni) is translated as at. In this example, 八時 (hachiji – 8:00) is the point in time that the particle に (ni) is expressing.

Number 2: Days of the Week

★　When used to express days of the week, に (ni) is translated as on. In this example, 火曜日 (kayōbi – Tuesday) is the point in time that the particle に (ni) is expressing.

Number 3: Months

★　When used to express months, に (ni) is translated as in. In this example, 五月 (gogatsu – May) is the point in time that the particle に (ni) is expressing.

Number 4: Years

★　When used to express years, に (ni) is translated as in. In this example, 2013年 (nisenjūsannen – 2013) is the point in time that the particle に (ni) is expressing.
