Today we learned how to say “I understood” and “I don’t understand” in Japanese. In this review, we will go over these phrases and we will introduce the casual versions.

Number 1:

 Wakarimashita means “I understood.”

 You can use this phrase to confirm that you understood something.

 The casual way to say it is wakatta.

Number 2:

 Wakarimasen means “I don’t understand.”

 The casual way to say it is wakaranai.

★ Wakarimasen can also be translated as “I don’t know,” although its use is not always the same as English.

Example:

こたえがわかりません。

Kotae ga wakarimasen.

I don’t know the answer.
