Japanese Phrase Lesson : Thanks for the Food いただきます。 – Review Notes
Today we learned two Japanese expressions for showing gratitude for food. In this review, we will also include other common variations of these expressions.
………………………………………………………………………………..
Number 1:
★ Itadakimasu literally means “I humbly receive (this meal).” It is used to show gratitude for the food, so it is sometimes translated as thanks for the food.
★ Itadakimasu is always said before eating, so it is sometimes translated as “let’s eat.”
★ Since English does not have an equivalent expression, it is often translated different ways.
………………………………………………………………………………..
Number 2:
★ Gochisōsama deshita means “thanks for the food.” Gochisō literally means “feast,” so the literal translation is something like “It was a feast.”
★ Japanese people say this after eating to express their gratitude for the food.
★ A more casual way to say it is Gochisōsama.
………………………………………………………………………………..
Conclusion:
Japanese people say these expressions every time they eat to express gratitude for the food. Let’s practice saying itadakimasu and gochisōsama deshita when we eat! Someday you will be able to impress your Japanese friends with how much you know!

When you say “thanks” for the food, why can’t you just use “arigato” in the sentence?
Comment by Ariel on 07/22/2013 at 4:09 pmIt doesn’t literally mean “thanks” for the food. It is a Japanese expression that does not exist in English and therefore is translated approximately. (◕ω◕)☆
