Japanese Grammar: Using the Particle ni (に) to indicate purpose – Review Notes
Today we learned how to use the Japanese particle に (ni) to indicate the purpose for going somewhere. In this review, we will go over what we learned in the video, and we will see some other ways to use this particle.

Using the particle に (ni) to indicate purpose:
★ The Japanese particle に (ni) can be used to indicate the purpose for going somewhere.

When the purpose is a noun:
★ Sometimes the purpose is a noun that indicates an activity. In this case, you just put the particle に (ni) after the noun that is the purpose.
★ In this example, the noun コンサート (konsāto – concert) is the purpose, so we put the purpose particle に (ni) after コンサート.
★ In this example, the noun 買い物 (kaimono – shopping) is the purpose, so we put the purpose particle に (ni) after 買い物.

When the purpose is a verb:
★ Sometimes the purpose is a verb or a verbal expression. In this case, we attach に (ni) to the stem of the verb.
★ The verb stem is the part of the verb that comes before ます (masu). If you don’t know about masu verbs yet, click here.

Example 1:
★ The stem of the verb 見ます (mimasu), “to see” or “to watch”, is 見 (mi).
★ In the following example, the purpose is the verbal expression 映画を見ます (eiga o mimasu) “to see/watch a movie.”
★ When we add the purpose particle に (ni) to the verb stem we get 映画を見に行きます (eiga o mi ni ikimasu) “I will go to see a movie.”

Example 2:
★ The stem of the verb 食べます (tabemasu), “to eat”, is 食べ (tabe).
★ In this example, we add the purpose particle に (ni) to the stem of the verb to make 食べに行きます (tabe ni ikimasu), “I will go (out) to eat.”

You can say レストランに食べに行きます。 (resutoran ni tabe ni ikimasu.) – I will go out to eat.
If you say 食べるためにレストランに行きます (taberu tame ni resutoran ni ikimasu) it’s okay grammatically but it sounds like you are saying “I go to the restaurant to eat.” (what else would you be going to a restaurant to do??) It sounds strange, so I recommend not to use this in this situation.
